Sum of the Parts (1998) Dempsey Calhoun Painted Steel and Fiberglass Sponsored by Bob and Bonnie Meeker
Made up of a series of 20 three-foot-square metal blocks, this sculpture by Winston Salem NC artist Dempsey Calhoun is designed to represent nature’s delicate balance and the diversity of life on earth.
The cubes are fashioned to represent a stack of children’s alphabet blocks and have plant, animal, and environmental designs on the visible sides. At its highest point, the stack is four cubes high.
Two of the blocks sit askew from the rest, tilting precariously. They symbolize the uncertain future of many species of threatened and endangered wildlife. One block has fallen away completely; it sits alone to represent plant and animal species already lost to extinction.
