To audition:  Prepare a 16 bar song, preferably not from the show. Bring sheet music for the accompanist or CD and player for recorded accompaniment.  Come dressed comfortably for a dance/movement exercise. You will be asked to read from the script.  Some improvisation may be required.  A conflict calendar is a part of the registration process with the proviso that schedule conflicts affect casting.

Once Upon a Mattress is the show that brought Carol Burnett to the forefront in 1959.  It is an adult (PG) telling of the Princess and the Pea.  Characters (with vocal ranges) include:  Princess Winnifred the Woebegone (mezzo-soprano), Prince Dauntless (baritone), Queen Aggravain (alto), Jester (tenor), Minstrel (tenor), King Sextimus the Silent (non-speaking), Lady Larkin (soprano), Wizard (baritone), Sir Harry (tenor), and a host of ladies-in-waiting, knights, soldiers, servants, etc.

Cursed King Sextimus cannot speak; Queen Aggravain has wrested control of the kingdom from him.  She wants to keep Dauntless single.  Only a princess that can pass a certain test may marry him.  And until he marries, no one else may marry.  Sir Harry, who wants to marry Lady Larkin, is able find an available princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, whom Dauntless likes very much.  Winnifred is able to pass the queen’s sensitivity test and, in short order, Dauntless and the Princess marry, the curse on Sextimus is broken, and Aggravain is prevented from further mischief.  All is now well.

Music for the show was written by Mary Rodgers, daughter of Richard Rogers.  The book was written by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer with lyrics by Marshall Barer.  The show opened Off-Broadway, then moved to Broadway.  It has been staged internationally with a Broadway revival in 1996 starring Sarah Jessica Parker.  Once Upon a Mattress is a jolly romp of song, dance, comedy, and spectacle which will be fun to work on and fun to see.
