October 6-9, 2016 is the date for the 38th Annual Tri-State Sculptors Conference. It will be held at Carolina Bronze Sculpture in Seagrove, NC and STARworks in Star, NC. This conference is designed to meet the needs and interests of sculptors and educators working in a variety of 3-D media, including metal, clay, glass, fibers, stone and mixed media. It will be a valuable educational experience that includes not only technical information, but marketing and business information as well.
The conference kicks off on Thursday with tours of the NC Zoo’s sculpture collection and the NC Pottery Center along with Seagrove area potters in Seagrove. The Tri-State Student Exhibit will open in Seagrove Thursday evening and then we will walk to the NC Pottery Center for a reception with heavy d’oeurves.
Friday’s activities at STARworks will be packed with presentations, demos and workshops and a sculpture trade show along with a round table discussion in the afternoon. Later events will move to Downtown Asheboro where there will be a walking tour of the outdoor sculpture exhibit, a reception for the Tri-State member show at the Sarah Smith Self Gallery and our keynote dinner and address by artist Noah Scalin.
Saturday’s activities at Carolina Bronze Sculpture will again be packed with presentations, demos and workshops along with a round table discussion in the afternoon. Liberty Arts from Durham, NC will be on hand with scratch molds during the afternoon and with the iron pour after dark. In the evening we will have our keynote dinner and address by potter and sculptor Daniel Johnston. The outdoor member exhibit at the new Carolina Bronze Sculpture Garden will be open all day with it’s newest large scale clay sculpture by Daniel Johnston fired onsite and unveiled in all it’s fiery glory as the evening’s grand finale. To wind down the evening we will have a bonfire and a PechKucha 20×20 presentation of member work.
The Tri-state Business meeting will be held on Sunday morning where we will be planning for another eventful year!
We are anticipating that attendance will exceed 150 sculpture professionals, students and educators, giving attendees ample opportunities for networking. Camping will be available on the Carolina Bronze grounds for a $5 fee. The conference hotel will be the Hampton Inn and the Fairfield Inn in Asheboro. We are working on a shuttle bus to help attendees get from one location to another.
